Our General Counsel and Legal team regularly attend conferences with leaders of like-minded organizations to better understand strategy and leadership skills. In addition, all lawyers are required to receive hours of legal training each year. Founded in 1976, Southeastern Legal Foundation (SLF) is an Atlanta-based public interest law firm committed to free enterprise, economic freedom, and limited government. The SLF engages in litigation and public policy to support its principles. It describes itself as a “conservative law firm and policy center dedicated to creating binding legal precedents and positive changes in public policy for all Americans.” Form 990 is a document that nonprofits file annually with the IRS. We use the resulting financial and accountability data to create overall ratings. Click here to view that organization`s Form 990 on the IRS website (if applicable). The IRS is significantly delayed in processing annual nonprofit income tax returns (Form 990). As a result, the Southeastern Legal Foundation`s Accountability & Finance score is outdated and the overall score may not be representative of current operations. Please contact the charity directly if you have any questions.
The independent website Charity Navigator gives SLF a rating of 3 out of 4 stars, including 4 out of 4 for an organizational undervaluation that measures revenue and expense growth. (continued) Founded in 1976, the Southeastern Legal Foundation (SLF) is a national law firm and policy center that advocates for limited government, individual economic freedom, and the free enterprise system in court and in public opinion. Our mission is to engage in litigation and public policy in support of these principles. We look for cases and issues where our engagement makes a difference, not only for the parties involved, but also for policies and contentious issues. We are not a single-issue organization; Rather, we are a conservative law firm and policy center dedicated to creating binding legal precedents and positive public policy changes for all Americans. This would normally have reduced their number of stars. Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we are giving charities like this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID`s impact on them, which interrupts our review of their assessment. Charities can submit their own pandemic measures through their not-for-profit portal.
Part of our goal in assessing the financial performance of charities is to help donors assess a charity`s financial performance and viability. Like organizations in other sectors, charities need to be careful about how they manage total liabilities relative to total assets. This ratio is an indicator of an organization`s solvency and/or long-term viability. Dividing a charity`s total liabilities by its total assets gives this percentage. The SLF is developing expertise in new policy areas such as traditional marriage, property rights reform and illegal immigration. In anticipation of a series of class action lawsuits due to global warming, the SLF has prepared information sessions and general information for potential defendants and lawyers. SLF employees and board members have represented the organization on FOX News Channel, CNN, MSNBC and countless talk radio programs. The charity`s score is 92%, earning it a four-star rating. If this organization aligns with your passions and values, you can give with confidence.
A guide to civil discourse on today`s college campuses. The non-profit has the opportunity to share how the organization has adapted to the huge external changes over the past year. The First Amendment protects both your right to speak and your right not to speak. This is what distinguishes America from the rest of the world. But in today`s society, our First Amendment rights are under attack like never before. The SLF is committed to guaranteeing and protecting this fundamental right so that all Americans can use and enjoy their property. Since 1976, the SLF has been fighting this battle before the US Supreme Court. Misappropriation of property – any unauthorized conversion or use of the charity`s assets outside of the charity`s authorized purposes, including, but not limited to, embezzlement or theft – can seriously compromise a charity`s financial integrity.
We look at the charity`s last two Form 990s to determine whether the charity reported misappropriation of property. When the charity reports a misappropriation, we verify that it followed the instructions on Form 990 by describing what happened and the corrective actions taken. This measure is assigned to one of the following categories: One of the SLF`s notable activities is the close monitoring of the U.S. Census Bureau`s ties with external groups such as ACORN. In an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in June 2009, Shannon Goessling, executive director of the SLF, criticized Supreme Court nominee Sonya Sotomayor for “rewriting the law to get the result she wanted.” This measure reflects what a charity spends on fundraising. Fundraising expenses may include campaign printing, advertising, mailing and staffing, as well as fundraising, membership and grant costs. Dividing a charity`s average fundraising expenditures by its average total functional expenditures gives this percentage. We calculate the charity`s average spending over the past three fiscal years. The Southeastern Legal Foundation cannot currently be assessed according to our culture and community methodology because we have not received data from the charity on its feedback or diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies. Note: The absence of a score does not mean a positive or negative rating, but only that we have not yet evaluated the organization. Type of objective: New program(s) based on the observed evolution of needs in our assisted ridings/communities. The right to own and enjoy your private property is the original fundamental right.
Too often, the government attempts to take property or regulate its use without fair compensation. This lighthouse provides an assessment of a charity`s financial health (financial efficiency, sustainability, and reliability) and its commitment to governance practices and policies. The SLF engages in a wide range of public policy issues, including crime reform, affirmative action, taxation, campaign finance reform, census, property rights and unemployment. Previous notable litigation of the foundation includes: SLF funders include U.S. Sugar, U.S. Steel and a number of oil, chemical, banking and construction companies. The Sarah Scaife Foundation, the Castle Rock Foundation and the John M. Olin Foundation have also supported the SLF. The Foundation encourages individual donations. As mentioned earlier, the Southeastern Legal Foundation is part of a network of conservative non-profit law firms in the public interest.
We join these other law firms throughout the year to share ideas and showcase our work. In some of our cases, we will even work with our sister organizations by filing amicus curiae briefs to support each other. In the “Awareness” category, it is important for us to inform the public about our work. To achieve this goal, we use various forms of communication such as mail, radio interviews, TV appearances, social media campaigns, etc. The program cost ratio is determined by program spending divided by total costs (average of the last three years 990). Goal Type: This goal reflects our commitment to advancing our advocacy work for our organization and/or root cause area. SLF also plays a role in many local cases in Atlanta. In total, the Group participated in 13 cases in 2008, prepared topic descriptions and background information, and supported other (non-contentious) programmes. Our operation has certainly continued personally or has become virtual. We have been largely intact. Audited financial statements provide important information on financial accountability and accuracy. They should be prepared by an independent auditor under the supervision of an audit committee. (The audit committee does not have to be a separate committee. For small charities, this is often the responsibility of the Finance Committee or the Executive Committee.) The committee provides a significant level of oversight between the organization`s management, who is responsible for financial reporting, and the independent accountant, who reviews finances and issues an opinion based on its findings. We review the charity`s Form 990 return to determine if it meets these criteria. We have invested in the software and equipment needed to enter the virtual world of work.
