Aversive collars are unfortunately only a side effect of outdated dog training practices and lack of regulation in the industry. While the creation of a governing body to regulate the dog training industry is now essential and necessary, it will take time. At the very least, as a thoughtful species, we can certainly begin to question and think about the use of clearly aversive devices such as electric, choke and shredded collars. If we love our pets so much, the call to treat them with kindness should be of paramount importance, and there is no reason why these devices should not be banned in favor of easily available and less aversive non-violent alternatives. It`s good to know that when a lot of people learn how bad they really are, they stop using them. It`s definitely a win-win situation for everyone. We intervene and control a lot the access to the physical and social worlds of our dogs. We decide when they eat, what they eat, when and with whom they play and also when, where and how long dogs are outside every day and, perhaps more subtly, by imposing the physical constraints of collars and leashes that determine the speed and direction of a dog`s movements. These control tools are often necessary, but we need to remain vigilant about the different ways they can inhibit a dog`s freedoms and how these devices themselves can be harmful to our dogs and to us. Our goal should be to use these tools to facilitate access to a variety of positive physical and social experiences and to give our dogs as much autonomy as possible so they can control and make decisions that suit them. 2.
