Let us return to the reasons for the regulation. It gets a bit tricky. Above all, shark mortality should be reduced. It`s no secret that sharks can become addicted to the gut from time to time, certainly not as often as some might think. If this happens, the shark is likely to die before it can be released. With the popularity of land-based shark fishing, dozens of photos appearing on social media seemed to indicate an alarming number of dead sharks presented by beginners. The reality, however, is quite different. Out of perhaps a thousand major shark landings in my twenty-year career, only half a dozen did not survive and were successfully released due to injuries caused by stainless steel offset J-hooks. I call that a remarkably low number. Whether you`re traveling to Texas to visit a friend or enjoy the incredible sights, it`s good to be aware of the wildlife common there. Texas is an incredibly large state in the United States and almost completely surrounded by an ocean.

There are 367 miles of coastline, which means a great chance to see sharks! In fact, about 40 species of sharks swim, hunt and sleep in Texas. Some of these sharks live in fresh and salt water. Texas is known for its large sharks and phenomenal fishing. While the best fishing grounds change seasons, Galveston and South Padre Island are among the top destinations. That`s what sucked me into the rabbit hole on the beach. For the same reason, my life revolves around ocean forecasting, bait migrations and seasonal changes. Shark fishing is my life. Over the past twenty years, I have done everything I can to optimize the efficiency and productivity of my fisheries. Whether I developed new methods and techniques or experimented with new baits, my zeal never diminished. Many years from now, when I am a salty old man, I expect to be driven by the same passion. Always on the water, entangled with predators at the top of the depths.

Raoult and his research team, along with researchers Kye Adams and Lachlan Fetterplace, try not to deter anyone from sport fishing, but suggest that they “try to limit the duration of exposure to sharks to minimize injury to the animal. It is better to release them immediately. Whale sharks are a docile but large species of shark. They look and hunt more like whales than sharks because they open their mouths to suck up the fish. These big fish live in the Gulf of Mexico, and although they prefer to swim in deeper waters, you can still see them up to 100 miles off the coast of Texas. They also don`t stay in one place for long, traveling great distances every day. However, they are slow swimmers and usually swim at speeds of up to 3 miles per hour. Don`t be fooled by their adorable appearance, they have over 3,000 small teeth that help them consume crustaceans like shrimp. However, they do not pose a threat to humans. You may be wondering what types of sharks you can catch off the Galveston coast. The most common sharks we catch are black tips, spinners who perform an acrobatic show after the hook and crested heads.

You can also catch mackerel fish or bull red wines, which are both another picky fish and tons of fun to catch! Although not as common as crested head sharks, fine-toothed sharks live in the coastal waters of Texas. They rarely dive more than 65 feet deep. Unlike other shark species, fine-toothed sharks swim in schools and hunt bony fish. These thin, gray sharks are also found primarily in the Gulf of Mexico, but are migratory. Once the water falls below 200°C, they migrate to the southern Atlantic Ocean. Anglers can legally fish for fine-toothed sharks in Texas, but the number they can catch is limited. Bull sharks are common off the coast of Texas and live in most of the world`s subtropical and tropical oceans. Unlike most sharks, bull sharks can live in both fresh and salt water. Here in Texas, they were found several miles upstream from the Gulf. Use simple barbless circular hooks.

If your hooks are not barbless, flatten the beard with pliers. Use a hook remover for throat sharks. If the shark has swallowed the hook, do not try to remove it, as this will cause serious damage and threaten the shark`s survival. The presence of great white sharks in the Gulf of Mexico is undeniable. Now, a large white man has been confirmed off the coast of Texas. And then there is the elimination of compensation. Anglers who were already using circular hooks relied primarily on the staggered variety to increase the distance between the point and the well to promote hooking rates in large sharks. The typical design of the circular hook is intended to make the fish eat the bait, then the bait comes out of the mouth with resistance and the hook catches up at the corner of the jaw. Offset circular hooks have little or no effect on the connection ratio unless the gap is too small for the shark you`re targeting. Going back to J-hooks, however, it was also common among shark anglers to intentionally shift the hook point only slightly to get more hooks.

But all this is just water under the bridge. We can no longer use offset brackets of any kind. A pillar of Sharker`s Tackle Box has not been part of fishermen`s arsenal for decades as we enter a new era. Golf shrimp season begins July 15. This means that you will see these large and beautiful shrimp boats just offshore. What this means for us is the start of a great shark fishery! While these shrimp trawlers drag and pull their nets, many small baitfish are thrown. It`s like a buffet for sharks! You can see them swimming behind the shrimp boats – especially when deck workers on boats eradicate their catch. At this point, we have lines in the water and float around these shrimp boats. Very quickly, the stems will be bent and the rush will begin! My personal feeling is that if Texas Parks and Wildlife really wants to protect the shark population, then maybe they should work more closely with federal authorities and focus their efforts on the shrimp off our coasts that illegally intercept sharks.
