What Ernest Wild taught was what was taught in London, Oxford and perhaps Cambridge, as well as in Scottish universities. And it was called “experimental psychology” at the time. University education in the Eastern Cape began in the college departments of four schools: St. Andrew`s College in Grahamstown, Gill College in Somerset East, Graaff Reinet College and the Grey Institute in Port Elizabeth. At the turn of the century, only St. Andrew`s and Gill prepared candidates for the final examinations of the University of Good Hope. Due to restrictions on staff, laboratory equipment and libraries, teaching was inadequate and it became clear that only a central institution could provide a satisfactory standard of university education. Under the direction of Professor de Villiers and Mr. Currie, a psychological clinic was founded for the first time. Unlike today`s psychological clinic, the clinic was relatively small and had qualified people from the departments of psychology and pedagogy. Nineteen Sixty-eight saw, perhaps for the first time, the development of highly specialized curricula within the department. Mr. Currie was involved in teaching industrial and clinical psychology, Mr.
P. B. Gradwell of the Settler Tribe of 1820 and perhaps more pertinently, a graduate of Oxford University specializing in physiological psychology, while Mr. H. W. Page (later promoted to associate professor) was brought to develop the field of experimental psychology. In 1969, the psychology staff expanded to include two lecturers and four lecturers under the direction of Professor de Villiers. Unfortunately, this first psychological clinic ceased operations in 1969 due to various personnel changes and a lack of expertise in the required areas. With Professor Wild`s retirement in 1964, an era came to an end, as there were several personnel changes during that time.
Meanwhile, psychology was a two-year major and students reading for a Bachelor of Arts could enroll in Psychology II in the second year and Psychology II and Psychology the following year. For this reason, the Ernest Wild Award, initiated in 1965 by his widow, rewards the best student in psychology in the second and third years and there is therefore no Ernest Wild Award for the first year. The psychology major prepares students for post-bachelor`s employment, graduate school, or professional training in psychology, health professions, business, law, and education. Applicants who have passed the baccalaureate are entitled to a full exemption provided that passes in approved subjects meet the following requirements: an APS score of 40 points and above receives a fixed offer, 37-39 points remain pending until the end of September to be considered by the Dean when space is available. Candidates offering a combination of Advanced Level (A), Advanced Subsidiary Level (AS), Ordinary Level (O), International General Certificate of Secondary Education (HIGCSE) and International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) will be counted five (5) different subjects. The basic minimum requirements for university admission are a full exemption certificate or a conditional exemption from the admissions committee. Grahamstown, outside the mainstream of commercial and industrial life, seemed an unlikely choice for a university town, but local residents were strongly in favour of the idea, although the project was nearly wiped out by the South African War of 1899–1902. In December 1902, Josiah Slater, MP for Albany and editor of Graham`s Town Journal, called a meeting to rekindle public interest in establishing a university in this small settler town. It exceeded all expectations, but enthusiastic pledges of local financial support were not enough, so the newly formed committee asked Rhodes administrators for the financial support they needed. Unfortunately, this was not successful. Therefore, Selmar Schonland, a distinguished botanist and curator of the Albany Museum, tried to approach one of Rhodes` administrators, Dr.
Leander Starr Jameson, directly. Jameson, soon elected MP for Albany and premier of the Cape Colony, promised £50,000 without consulting his colleagues. At first, they refused to confirm the grant; Then persuaded by Schonland, they handed over DeBeer`s £50,000 preferred share to Rhodes University College, which was incorporated by an Act of Parliament on May 31, 1904. Early in 1905 Rhodes moved from the cramped space of St. Andrew`s College to the Drostdy Building, which he purchased from the British government in 1909. Psychology was clearly a growing discipline, and in 1926, Rhodes became the first university to establish an independent psychology department. It was headed by a Senior Lecturer in the person of Mr N M (Morris) Ramsay, MA (Hons), Glasgow and Cambridge. He was named the recipient of the Edward Caird Prize in Mental Philosophy.

By this time, the Department of Humanities and Moral Sciences (still headed by Professor Lord) had been merged with History and Economics, so that there was now a wide group of disciplines encompassing philosophy, history, economics and psychology. The final module of the course aims to provide students with an introduction to the field and practice of organizational psychology and psychological assessment in industry. Particular attention will be paid to the history and development of organizational psychology as a sub-discipline, the different roles of practitioners in this field, and the ways in which psychologically informed understandings of human behaviour and workplace experiences can be used to understand phenomena such as productivity, motivation, workplace diversity, teamwork, organizational structure and functioning. Research methods and evaluations in industry are also taken into account. It is recommended that all universities entering South Africa for the first time write NBTs. If the applicant does not meet the automatic admission requirements, the NBT results will be included in the Dean`s decision on applications. These results can also be used if a candidate does not meet the entry requirements for their final exams. The Department of Psychology is in the top 20 in the country as a source of undergraduate psychology PhDs, and the main reason for this success is our 20+ year history of student engagement in faculty research. The Department of Psychology offers a range of courses that encompass a broad program representing the main orientations of contemporary psychology.

In partnership with the Department, the Critical Studies on Sexualities and Reproduction (CSSR) research program exists to conduct critical research that addresses the social and human dynamics that underpin our slow progress toward full sexual and reproductive citizenship for all. This program reflects and supports the Department`s focus on essential gender and sexuality.
