These clinics, collectively known as the Loyola Social Justice Law Clinic, share a 23,000-square-foot facility that simulates the experience of a multi-specialty law firm and gives students hands-on experience at a law firm. “We ended up with satellite clinics,” says Murray, who was a single-family and child protection practitioner before joining a family rights partnership before joining the Bank of Ontario. “We had female students helping people at the Spanish centre, and I was working in a feminist centre called Women`s Place. Justice Ellen Murray (LL.B. 1975), who has now retired from the Bank of the Ontario Court of Justice, recalls that there was a great deal of energy and debate about whether SLAS should have a central campus or many satellite clinics. Prichard remembers a few rooms on the second floor of 44 St.
George Street and a single room in Falconer Hall as student administration offices. Jackman adds that community legal clinics are important because they are the training ground for future human rights lawyers. “[SLAS] was in stark contrast to Osgoode`s Parkdale Clinic, which was a large, fully integrated institution with students spending an entire semester on loans,” says Prichard, who is now president of Torys LLP and president of The Hospital for Sick Children. “Without course credit, it was just something you did because you believed in it,” he says. “There was clearly a need for this type of service for people who couldn`t afford a lawyer and had minor legal problems. We had to help them interpret and develop a strategy to help them overcome the difficulties they were facing. “We taught each other from the beginning. We learned, but we weren`t recognized for it, and we wanted to be able to spend more time in clinics without sacrificing our classes.

So we had to be careful what we took. The first cases Jackman worked on included supporting a group of women working with immigrant women, an offshoot of the Spanish center, where there was a satellite clinic. *The clinical program was renamed Downtown Legal Services (DLS) in 1982. There was a lawyer who appealed the administrative rejection, so I went for it. But that was on a case-by-case basis. If students thought they needed extra help, they could find someone to mentor them. “The people involved in SLAS were great. They were very important to me during law school and many have had remarkable careers pursuing progressive causes. I am always very proud of my cooperation with everyone. Barbara Jackman (LL.B. 1976), one of Canada`s most respected refugee and immigration lawyers, says that while SLAS volunteers have learned a lot, they have also spent a lot of time on their case.
