Strong legal reasoning skills are essential to students` learning and performance throughout their law studies and ultimately to the quality of their legal practice. Strong legal reasoning skills are essential to students` learning and performance throughout their law studies and ultimately to the quality of their legal practice. In a broader sense, many employers outside the legal profession view the ability to solve problems by identifying problems, developing arguments, and expressing argumentation processes and decisions clearly and persuasively as a highly desirable attribute. The unit was designed with one ultimate goal: to equip students with the skills and analytical knowledge in legal reasoning necessary to perform well throughout their law studies. After successfully completing this unit, you must be sure that you will be able to find, read, analyze and make strategic arguments from case law and legislation. They should also understand how technology offers lawyers (including judges) new ways to conduct legal analysis and make decisions in accordance with the law, and how these changes challenge traditional concepts and approaches to law and legal resonance. These changes raise fascinating new legal and ethical challenges, which are explained in this unit using recent case studies. The Legal Reasoning Unit reflects the diversity of institutions and laws within the Australian legal system, adopts design principles and learns from Australia, England and America, and the case studies used come from a number of common law countries.
