The Supreme Court of Pakistan has an extensive and competitive program for the appointment of law clerks/research associates. Applications are being solicited across Pakistan encouraging new law graduates, lawyers and lawyers to submit their resumes, transcripts, three letters of recommendation and a legal writing sample. Candidates are then shortlisted on a purely merit-based basis and finally questioned by the selection board, composed of senior judges and trainee lawyers from the Court of Justice, before their final appointment. In recent years, all appointed trainee lawyers have been chartered lawyers who have been placed at the top of their class with excellent research evidence. Clerks sit on the court during hearings. In private practice, he assists the judge in making legal decisions, carrying out searches, critically reviewing court decisions and preparing briefs, etc. Trainee lawyers are paid employees of the court for a renewable term of one year. The Supreme Court has 17 trainee lawyers for the year 2017-2018. Clerks are usually law school graduates who have been at or near the top of their class. Service as a judicial officer is considered one of the most prestigious positions in legal circles and tends to open up vast opportunities in academia, law firm practice and influential government work.

[3] In some countries, court clerks are called court clerks or judicial assistants. A clerk assists a judge by providing information about the priority of cases to be submitted to court and the status of each case. They also assist in the translation of legal documents. Clerks install equipment in the courtroom to ensure it is ready for each individual case. They can also serve as a link between clients, lawyers and judges. Legal internships in state courts of appeals are similar to those in federal courts of appeals, but focus primarily on state law rather than federal law issues. [53] Some state courts also use the title “Staff Attorney” for professionals and employees who assist all judges. [54] For law students who wish to practice in a particular state or geographic region after their articling period, state call rotations or court rotations can often be more useful than federal articling in getting to know judges, lawyers, and firms in the field and seeing litigators at work.

[55] In general, their status is governed by the Law on the System of Ordinary Courts of 27 July 2001,[24][25] but there are also assistants in administrative courts, the Polish Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court, where special rules may apply. You will be recruited through a competitive process consisting of three phases: the application itself, a legal knowledge test and an interview. Only law graduates who are Polish citizens of good character and who are over 24 years of age may apply for a position in the ordinary courts. Similar requirements apply to administrative tribunals, except that there is no explicit determination of age. [26] [27] The ratio is approximately one clerk per judge, and the clerk changes judges after a period, usually three months. The reason for this is that working for different judges broadens the scope of learning. Due to extreme competition – both by judges for the best candidates and by candidates for the best internships – the pace of recruitment is extremely fast. It is not uncommon for federal judges to offer an internship to a candidate at the end of an initial interview and require the candidate to provide an immediate response. These job postings are known as “explosive offers.” [48] [49] Some have compared the process to land racing or binge eating. [50] Although some federal internships become available after September, most federal judges complete their hiring by the end of October.

The most prestigious internships include those of the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. courts of appeals, some U.S. District Courts, specialized courts such as the U.S. Tax Court and U.S. Bankruptcy Courts, the New York State Commercial Division, the Delaware Court of Chancery, and state supreme courts. Some U.S. district courts offer experiences that are particularly useful to trainee lawyers in specific areas. The Southern District of New York is handling an increased volume of high-profile commercial disputes, the Eastern District of Texas is handling the highest number of patent cases in the country, the Northern District of California is leading the country in antitrust lawsuits, and the District of Columbia is hearing many high-profile litigation with the federal government.

Similarly, the U.S. Tax Court specializes in resolving federal tax disputes, U.S. bankruptcy courts specialize and often influence issues arising from U.S. bankruptcy law, the New York State Commercial Division quickly adjudicates high-profile business matters, and the Delaware Court of Chancery hears a significant number of derivative shares by companies and shareholders. Since 1991,[36] law graduates from the National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University, and prestigious foreign universities, only those receiving first-class awards or equivalent awards,[37] have been invited to join the Supreme Court as judicial clerks. The Supreme Court consists of the High Court and the Court of Appeal, Singapore`s final court of appeal. Upon acceptance of the appointment, the judges` law clerks will be appointed for a term of one and a half years, with a possible extension of 6 months. During their tenure, trainee lawyers have the opportunity to work with both High Court and Court of Appeal judges and the Chief Justice. After their tenure, trainee lawyers have the opportunity to join the permanent establishment of the Singapore Legal Service.

If they make use of this possibility, they will be transferred to other departments of the Singapore Legal Service, for example as Deputy Prosecutors to the Attorneys General or Deputy Registrars at the Registry of the Supreme Court. Many judicial law clerks choose to join private companies after their tenure (and some have recently earned the title of senior counsel), while others have chosen a path in academia. Moreover, this role is reinforced by the fact that the European Union is made up of very different nations with different legal systems. Kenney noted that CJEU officials provide legal and linguistic expertise (all opinions are written in French), lighten the workload of their members, participate in oral and written interactions between chambers, and ensure continuity when members change rapidly. While Kenney concludes that they have more power than their American counterparts. The officials of the Supreme Court, the CJEU act as agents for their clients – the judges – and are not the puppeteers that critics claim. In India, law graduates from the National Law University go through a competitive appointment and interview process to be accepted as a trainee lawyer. The Supreme Court of India and several high courts of India offer paid legal internships, which are considered very prestigious. These internships generally last one year (the session starts from July to mid-May) and may be extended at the discretion of each judge. There are different opinions on the influence of assistants on the Polish judicial system.
