No summer job prepares you for high school, college, or a professional career like SLI! Think of SLI as an investment in your future. The hard work you do now will pay off very well in the future if you succeed in high school, get admission to a top-notch college, and can enter the career of your choice. You will also receive a scholarship for passing the SLI (translation: you will be paid for the apprenticeship). Prior to the LSAT, final exams, or bar exam, pre-college students can lay the groundwork for a future legal career during a summer law program. Hosted by a variety of world-class universities and colleges, these programs give participants an insight into the U.S. legal system, from contracts and torts to constitutional and criminal law.

This 3-week intensive academy provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the U.S. legal system and the practice of law in the United States. That sounds good, but what if I don`t want to become a lawyer? You should still apply! The skills you acquire in the SLI are not just skills that lawyers use. All successful students and professionals should be able to think critically, write well, speak well in public, and advocate on behalf of themselves and others. The goals of the program are to provide access to legal education experience for first-generation students, low-income and/or underrepresented students in law school programs and ultimately to contribute to the diversification of legal practitioners in Milwaukee and beyond.
Marquette Law School and the Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association co-sponsor an annual Summer Youth Institute (SYI). The SYI is designed to introduce middle and high school students in the city of Milwaukee to the legal system, familiarize them with legal careers, and provide them with practical tools to achieve their educational goals. The SYI is open to students entering Grades 8, 9 or 10 next fall. Registration is limited to approximately 24 students. This program aims to enroll students who demonstrate motivation, maturity and a genuine interest in pursuing academic goals. Students must live and go to school in the city of Milwaukee. Students who are related to a first-generation college (neither of your parents have a university degree) or who use English as a second language are strongly encouraged to apply.
