This module provides a historical and thematic introduction to the issues facing Africa in the international system today. The module is divided into two sections. The first section examines the continent`s historical integration into the emerging international system with a focus on Europe from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. We focus on the economic, state and racial impact of colonialism and independence on the prospects for democracy and development in the region today. The second section deals with important current issues and actors shaping the continent.

The latter includes “top-down” actors such as the Chinese state, as well as grassroots actors such as unionized South African workers. This course builds on students` knowledge of the approaches and methods of studying politics and international relations introduced in the first year of the study program and on the basis of the analysis of quantitative data established in the second year. Students are invited to consider the nature and purpose of descriptive and causal analysis in politics and international relations. Students develop skills in the selection, use and evaluation of research designs, as well as data collection and analysis techniques used by researchers in these fields. The course emphasizes a blended approach to policy analysis, which allows students to integrate, analyze and evaluate qualitative and quantitative data. In addition to developing a conceptual and theoretical understanding of different approaches to evidence collection and analysis and their combination, students will also have the opportunity to broaden their practical data analysis skills. This module examines contemporary literature on gender and politics, with a particular focus on women`s participation and representation in British politics. It introduces you to feminist theories of representation, debates on women`s interests and feminist institutionalism. It applies these frameworks to examine why the number of women in our parliaments might play a role and what difference – symbolically, substantially and emotionally – gender and gender make to elected political institutions, the political process, political outcomes and healthy democracies. By studying politics and law, you can place the implementation of public policy in its legal context.

They develop an understanding of the power of individuals and theories of the state, as well as the laws created by the political process. You will see how political structures influence the laws you apply to real-world problems and the theory behind social responsibilities and relationships protected by law. The most notable are the so-called “Arab Spring” uprisings that began in late 2010 and the subsequent consequences of these uprisings on the region`s international relations. Topics include the early emergence of Arab states, the origins and sustainability of authoritarian regimes, types of state and personality cults, masculinity and constructions of identity and belonging, women`s movements, social mobilization, and Arab uprisings. South Asian politics – India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh – is key to understanding some of the fundamental issues of modern politics: poverty and development, security and war, migration and transnationalism, decolonization and postcolonialism, the international economy and globalization. This module deals with the social and political development of these countries since independence from British rule in 1947. We will analyse issues such as caste politics, the role of religious violence, and women`s place in politics and society. Sources come from a range of disciplines – politics and IR, history, sociology, anthropology, novels and films. We will examine regional cooperation and conflicts, including the problematic relations between India and Pakistan over Kashmir and its nuclear status. By the end of the module, you will have a specific understanding of the main social, economic and political developments in the region.
