Write a 100-150 word article on “The Sorrows of Indian Women” for your school newspaper. You are Suresh/Shivani from DAV Public School, New Delhi. Answer: Question 10: Based on the information contained in the entry, write an article on “Child Labour and the Struggle for Children`s Rights in India”. Tips: • 2014 Nobel Peace Prize to Kailash Satyarathi and Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan • 2001 census • 12.6 million • 5-14 years • 217 million children work • 120,000 children work in hazardous jobs • UNICEF estimates • India has the highest number of workers under the age of 14 • Article 24 of the Constitution prohibits child labour • 32.7 lakh in rural areas • 10.8 lakh in urban areas • Manufacturing industry carpets in Mirzapur • Bracelet and glass industry in Firozabad • Fireworks in Sivakasi. Answer: Child labour and the struggle for children`s rights in India – Riya Kailash Satyarthi brought laurels to the people of India for the award of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize with Malala for her fight for the safety of children. The world has appreciated the fight it has been waging for years for children`s rights. The term “child labour” is actually the work that robs children of their childhood. It destroys their potential and dignity. In short, it is the kind of work that is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful to children.

Child labour is the practice of ensuring that children engage in part-time or full-time economic activity. The Constitution of India (Article 24) prohibits the employment of children under the age of 14 in factories, mines or castles or in other hazardous work. But all these laws are just dead words on paper. Millions of children have been forced to work in hazardous industries. According to the 2001 census, approximately 12.6 million children between the ages of 5 and 14 work in various sectors and economic activities. India has the highest number of workers under the age of 14 in the world. Even today, there are 32.7 lakh children who are forced to work in rural areas and 10.8 lakh in urban areas. The carpet industry in Mirzapur and Bhadoi is notorious for the exploitation and employment of children. In the glass and bracelet industry in Firozabad, more than 20,000 children work in hazardous and dangerous conditions.

The diamond industry also employs thousands of children. The latest ILO report states that child labour is of great importance in Tamil Nadu`s fireworks, matches or incense stick industries. About 20 million children are condemned to work as domestic servants and in restaurants. Many NGOs such as Kailash Satyarathi`s “Bachpan Bachao Andolan” are sincerely working to eliminate child labour in India. Only concerted efforts by government, NGOs and the public can eradicate this evil from our civilized society. The format of an article consists of the following parts: Question 7: Over the years, the number of students from different cities in India seeking admission to metropolitan universities has steadily increased. As a result, universities in the subways have not been able to accommodate the growing number of students due to the severe lack of space. Write an article for your school newspaper highlighting the anxiety and pressures students face during the admission period. Suggest ways to combat the lack of seats. You are Mohan/Mohita, a student at the A.K. International School in Agra. Answer: Lack of places in colleges – Mohan/Mohita Over the years, the number of students seeking admission to higher education has steadily increased. Most students try to get admitted to metropolitan colleges. As a result, colleges in subways have failed to accommodate the growing number of students due to the severe lack of space.

Over the past decade, the number of students seeking admission has increased by 10,000 each year. The number of seats remained constant for five years. The result is quite disappointing. Thousands of students are missing out on their chance to access higher education. Many others have to console themselves with correspondence or distance learning courses. Students and their parents have to deal with a lot of fear and pressure during the admission period. The competent authorities can no longer sleep on the problem. The problem should be a priority. This requires a comprehensive solution. Colleges in subways must take immediate steps to increase the number of places. Another practical suggestion is to provide evening classes in colleges. Evening classes at all colleges can accommodate most students who cannot be admitted to regular day colleges.

Guest speakers must be appointed to meet the needs. The authorities must wake up before it is too late. 4. Your article should present your ideas not sketchy, but coherent and logical.
