“I think for many law students and many people who are likely to change careers, quality of life issues are just as important as other factors like the prestige of a law firm,” said Rachel Marx, legal writer at Vault. “[Large companies] can offer things like great employee-partner relationships, training opportunities and transparency initiatives.” Williams & Connolly, headquartered in Washington D.C., took first place for overall quality of life for the second year in a row, followed by Ropes & Gray in Boston. Vault surveyed nearly 17,000 employees who ranked their own company in 13 different categories, ranging from associate/partner relationships and diversity to compensation and satisfaction. This year, these companies hired an average of 64 employees. This is an increase of 131% over the historical average. Meanwhile, the top 10 companies to work for have hired 37% more employees so far this year than in the last four years (35 vs. 26). Michelle Fivel, a partner at Major Lindsey & Africa who focuses on recruiting staff for large law firms, said she was not surprised to see a widespread increase in revenue. These companies are therefore looking for lawyers who have not yet reached a breaking point. Three other companies have joined McDermott at the top of the quality of life rankings. Williams & Conolly LLP regained its No. 1 spot in selectivity after falling to No. 2 in the 2021 rankings. Morgan Lewis climbed five places to 1st pro bono this year, for the first time at the top of the rankings. Robinson + Cole also jumped – from No. 8 to No. 1 – and dominated the rankings for Lateral & Clerk Integration.

“Students realize that in their daily lives and sustainability, being in a law firm is much more than just prestige,” Marx said. “Our profiles really focus on quality of life issues, because if you don`t know someone who works at a particular company, it`s hard to understand what the culture looks like.” Large law firms usually pay their employees the same way. The traditional understanding of the talent market has been that employees choose to work in the most prestigious companies under otherwise equal conditions. Nevertheless, there are companies whose employees recognize that they offer a better quality of life. The 10 law firms selected an average of 28 lawyers as the most reputable lawyers from January to mid-July from 2017 to 2020, according to an analysis by Decipher, which provides lateral due diligence services to law firms. It is impossible to know which of these stories is the truest. Some companies probably have too much work. Some employees are probably exhausted. We weigh the benefits and demands of life at BigLaw and evaluate which companies find the best balance.
