There is no sequencing offered, although students are advised to take at least one advanced elective course in legal writing before graduation. Students can only enroll in an advanced legal writing course each semester. None of the elective courses will meet the highest writing requirements. The Legal Research and Writing (LRW) program offers mandatory and elective courses that teach students the basic techniques of legal research, writing, and analysis – essential tools of the legal profession. During the first year of law school, LRW`s full-time faculty teach a mandatory four-credit one-year course. Throughout the year, instructors work closely with students in smaller classrooms, introducing case information sessions, case synthesis, and analysis through a series of research and writing assignments. Students learn to research legal issues, formulate legal arguments, and analyze legal problems. In addition to learning traditional research methods, students are also trained in the use of computer-aided legal research such as Lexis, Westlaw and Bloomberg Law. This year-round course concludes with an oral hearing in a mock court case in which each student submits an application based on a dissertation written by the student.

Advanced and specialized approaches to the use of legal resources available in a legal library and elsewhere will be explored. The conceptual differences between computer-assisted legal research and printed research are taught. Successful completion of the Paralegal Certificate Course, Part I (Paralegal 1 and 2) or corresponding experience or law firm. * If “Yes”, students must submit extensive research work in this course, which means that students do not need to submit a form to SRO for this work to meet their higher writing requirements. If “No”, students must submit a “Special Request” electronic form to the SRO (available via LawWeb) no later than five weeks after the start of the semester in order for a job in that class to count towards the written requirement of the higher level. This course teaches students to be effective advocates by providing a solid foundation in research skills and information theory. This course will combine lecture with practice and students will gain hands-on experience conducting fundamental and complex research using a variety of research tools. Advanced Legal Skills This course develops and refines the research, analysis, citation and writing skills introduced during the first year of the Legal Skills course. Under close supervision and guidance, students are expected to develop their own research strategies using a wide range of research materials. The written component of the course consists of writing an appeal brief and interviews. Students will also examine, critique and revise examples of typical written documents in legal practice.

Students will also present oral reasoning based on the appeal briefs. The course includes peer review, self-publishing, small group and individual lectures, and classroom presentations. You will conduct five 30-point legal research and write practical application exercises with westlaw online legal research. Being a prudent, clear and concise author is crucial for all aspects of advocacy. Beyond first-year legal writing, each student must meet the higher writing requirement before their final semester at law school. However, students should take advantage of as many opportunities as possible to improve their skills in this area. The LRW program also offers Advanced Lawyering Skills, a two-credit higher level course in which students hone their writing skills by preparing an appellate dissertation and expanding their use of research materials, including legislative history and regulatory law. This program is coordinated by our educational partner CLS by BARBRI, one of America`s most respected legal education centers. They have been offering legal programs nationwide since 1980. These courses are taught by experienced lawyers and education professionals selected by CLS. This exciting course is designed to teach advanced and specialized approaches to leveraging legal resources available in a legal library and elsewhere. The conceptual differences between computer-assisted legal research and printed research are taught.

You will also learn how to formulate WESTLAW search queries and how to use WESTLAW and other online legal research methods effectively and efficiently as a way to save time in legal research and writing. You should spend about 9 hours per lesson reading and completing writing assignments. 70% is the minimum score to pass all tests and assignments for this course. Please note that no extensions will be granted for this online course. Students may consider working in the program if they have the time. You will carry out three legal missions in 100 points: a legal analysis, a case description and a legal brief. The Faculty of Law also offers advanced legal research courses that enable students to understand the most effective and cost-effective legal research tools and methods. The Advanced Legal Research Workshop includes lectures, discussions, practical research and exercises in various fields. Students may also enroll in an advanced legal research course focused on research in specific areas such as taxation or copyright and trademark law or New York State or foreign and international resources.

Virtually all advanced legal writing courses are limited-enrollment seminars that are limited to twelve students and taught by associate professors who are specialists in the respective field. Fordham recognizes the fundamental importance of legal writing and offers a variety of advanced elective courses in legal writing. These courses offer students the opportunity to develop their written communication skills and create legal documents in a “workshop” environment. Legal Skills I Legal Skills I is a mandatory first-year course designed to introduce students to essential problem-solving and advocacy communication skills. The Faculty of Law Research and Writing works closely with students in smaller classrooms to introduce legal analysis techniques, the basic sources and processes of legal research, and the principles of legal writing and oral advocacy. Through a series of increasingly complex tasks, students learn to analyze legal issues, research legal issues, formulate legal arguments, and gain experience in developing the main forms of predictive and persuasive legal writing. During the first semester, in Legal Skills I, students are placed in the role of lawyer as consultants and consultants focusing on predictive and consultative writing while learning other legal skills such as fact gathering and analysis, interviews and advising clients. Students write legal notes, conduct interviews, write professional emails and letters, and hold office meetings, all related to conducting practice-oriented work.
